Being a HandyDART driver at MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. means that you are making a difference in the quality of life of our customers. With a growing fleet of over 350 vehicles, the transport of over 5000 customers per day, and operations in 6 depots across Metro Vancouver, we need drivers to provide this vital service to our community. Our HandyDART Operators play an integral role in providing this service and are the face of the company to our customers. As our ridership grows, we need motivated, energetic and customer-oriented people to come on board.
HandyDART drivers are responsible for the safe and on-time transport of their passengers to and from their destinations, which includes renal dialysis, adult day programs, workshops, doctor’s offices, hospitals, work, school, shopping and other social engagements. We offer door-to-door service to our customers.
Our drivers operate a variety of vehicles from 6 to 20-passenger buses throughout the local communities of Metro Vancouver. We have depots in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Richmond, New Westminster, Maple Ridge and Surrey. This position is a fantastic job opportunity for individuals who:

All driving positions are casual to start but can work up to 37.5 hours per week depending on your availability and operational need. However, depending on your availability and seniority, you can move into part-time or full-time positions for 37.5 guaranteed hours per week. Qualifications
To be considered for a HandyDART driving position you must be:
- A Canadian Citizen or have Landed Immigrant status.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- A Minimum age of 19 years old.
Driving Record Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate a safe driving history as assessed by MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. Your driving record over the past ten (10) years will be reviewed as part of the application process.
To qualify for consideration, you must:
- Hold a minimum of a Class 4 Unrestricted Driver’s License.
- Acceptable Driver’s Licenses are: Class 1, 2 or 4 unrestricted (airbrake, automatic transmission only or corrective lenses restrictions accepted)

- Acceptable Driver’s Licenses are: Class 1, 2 or 4 unrestricted (airbrake, automatic transmission only or corrective lenses restrictions accepted)
- Have no more than three (3) violations in the last five (5) years (this includes non-moving violations).
- Have no suspensions or prohibitions of any kind in the past ten (10) years.
Due to our driving record requirements, if you already have three (3) violations when you apply and you receive either an additional violation, suspension or prohibition during the recruitment process, your application will no longer be considered.
Motor Vehicle Accident Record Requirements
To qualify for further consideration, you must have no more than one (1) “at-fault” accident in the past three (3) years.
Due to our accident record requirements, if you already have one (1) “at-fault” accident when you apply and you receive either an additional “at-fault” accident or an “outstanding” accident during the recruitment process, your application will no longer be considered.
Note: Should you receive additional violations, points, prohibitions or accidents that exceed our requirements at any point during the recruitment process, your application will no longer be considered.
Applications are assessed to determine if applicants have demonstrated a safe and responsible driving history, as determined by MVT Canadian Bus, Inc.
Other Qualifications/Requirements
- No Criminal Charges or Convictions related to the duties of this position.
- Able to understand, speak, read and write English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position. Willing and able to work various types of shifts from 5:00am to 12:00am, as per collective agreement.
Steps in our Recruitment Process – HandyDART Drivers
The timeline for the following process may vary however, in most cases, each step is completed on a different date.
1. Application Package Submission
Submitted application packages will be reviewed for completeness and qualifications to ensure all information required has been provided. Only those applicants short-listed for further consideration will be contacted. Application packages will be kept on file for six (6) months.
2. Phone Interview
The phone interview is an assessment tool whereby we contact you for a 5-10 minute interview. At this time both you and MVT are able to ask questions to determine if this position is right for you.
3. Written Test and Group Activity
This step will take approximately two (2) hours. The Written Test is comprised of multiple choice questions on general knowledge. The Group Activity will be given to you and 5-7 other participants. MVT will use these tools in our assessment of your suitability as a HandyDART Driver.
When attending testing, you must bring valid picture identification with you (i.e. valid driver’s license). To ensure the integrity and security of MVT Canadian Bus, Inc.’s hiring process, only a Pass/Fail result will be disclosed. Detailed information or feedback about test results or scores will not be provided.
4. Trainability Test
The Trainability Test is conducted at one of MVT Canadian Bus, Inc.’s depots. The applicant spends approximately 30 minutes with a Driver Trainer and has the opportunity to drive a HandyDART bus on the city streets in the area. This testing measures driving skills, ability to follow directions and locate addresses.
On the day of your Trainability Test, you must bring with you the original copy of your British Columbia Driver’s License (Class 4 Unrestricted or greater) and a current original Driver’s Abstract. Please ensure that your license has not expired.
To ensure the integrity and security of MVT Canadian Bus, Inc.’s hiring process, only a Pass/Fail result will be given. Detailed information or feedback about test results or scores will not be disclosed.
5. Final Interview
Applicants must demonstrate that they possess the key qualities for the position, referring to specific past and present work-related experiences. While attending the interview, you must present picture identification in the form of a valid Driver’s License. (If you have recently renewed your Driver’s License and carry just an Interim Driver’s Permit please ensure you have a valid passport or BC ID in your possession). You must also bring a complete list of work references (if not already supplied).
6. Reference Checking
An applicant who successfully completes the Final Interview will be contacted and notified that his/her references will be contacted. A minimum of three (3) professional references encompassing the last five (5) years are required to complete this stage of the process. In-depth reference checks are conducted by MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. staff to verify all information provided on the application form and during the Final Interview is accurate.
7. Criminal Record and Driving Record Search
MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. will conduct a Criminal Record and Driving Record Search at the end of the process. (Please do not complete this step yourself). There is no cost to you to complete the criminal record search. We let all applicants know that the Criminal Record Search and Vulnerable Sector Search includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:
- Offences related to drugs or alcohol
- Offences related to violence or the threat of violence, including physical assault
- Offences related to physical or sexual abuse
- Offences related to theft or fraud or any other relevant offence not mentioned above
Applications are assessed to determine if applicants have demonstrated a safe and responsible driving history and have conducted themselves in a manner becoming of an MVT employee, as determined by MVT Canadian Bus, Inc.
8. HandyDART Driver Training Program
Those who have successfully completed all of the recruitment steps are contacted with an invitation to attend our HandyDART Driver Training Program. This is not an offer for employment.
The training program is paid. It is full-time, Monday to Friday for twelve (12) days. All training days must be consecutively completed within one session. The program consists of in-class and on-the-road instruction in wheelchair handling and securement, health and safety, MVT processes and procedures, technology, disability awareness, customer service and driver expectations.
We are unable to offer you a position with MVT unless you successfully complete the twelve (12) day HandyDART Driver Training Program. You may be asked to leave our training program at any time, based upon the Driver Trainer’s assessment of your suitability as a HandyDART driver. Because of this, if you are currently working, we encourage you to attempt to retain your employment until you successfully complete our training period.

9. Welcome to the Team
When a candidate passes the HandyDART Driver Training Program, they are offered a Casual Driving position with MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. Shifts will be assigned according to seniority while adhering to the collective agreement. You may apply for internal Permanent Driving positions as they become available.

- A current Claim’s History Letter; available by calling ICBC at 604-661-2233, who will fax or email it to you.
- A Resume and/or Cover Letter are optional but appreciated.
Applied Before?
If you are submitting a subsequent application package, please follow the above instructions. However, we do keep application packages on file for six (6) months and will only accept a new application package every six (6) months.
If you have previously attended a testing session or interview with MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. and were not a successful applicant at that time, you may reapply one (1) year from the date of that occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions – HandyDART Operators
Q. Do transit operators belong to a union?
A. HandyDART Operators are represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local 1724.
Q. How many hours can I expect to work?
A. HandyDART Operators start as casual and are not guaranteed hours, but can work up to 37.5 hours per week depending on your availability and operational need. However, depending on your availability and seniority you can move into full-time positions for 37.5 guaranteed hours per week.
Q. Do I need to have a commercial driver’s license to apply?
A. A driver applicant must have a commercial driver’s license in order to apply at MVT. See the Qualifications section for more information.
Q. What kinds of past driving violations will disqualify me from being considered?
A. Your driving record over the past six years will be reviewed as part of the application process. You must demonstrate a safe driving history as assessed by MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. in order to qualify for any position that involves the operation of a Company vehicle. Even if you are able to meet the minimum requirements, an excessive number of violations, prohibitions, suspensions and/or accidents in the past may exclude you from consideration.
Q. Can I apply even if I have a minor criminal record?
A. Q. How long must I wait to reapply if I don’t pass the initial screening process?
A. In order to give unsuccessful applicants an opportunity to improve their skills, MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. will accept subsequent applications one (1) year from the date of your previous assessment. If you have previously applied but have not been contacted by MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. for the first step in our hiring process, you may reapply once every six (6) months.

A. Our service operates from 6:00am to 12:00am, 7 days a week.
